Relief from TMJ Symptoms in Houston

TMJ is the common abbreviation for a temporomandibular joint.  A TMJ disorder (TMD) occurs when the temporomandibular joint – the joint connecting the jawbone to the skull – suffers damage or injury.  The symptoms of TMJ disorders vary by patient and may include neck pain, back pain, headaches, and ear pain.  Dr. Barras, DDS has extensive experience finding and eliminating the causes of TMJ disorders.  TMJ disorders can result from many causes, including:

Dentistry. Missing and damaged teeth affect bite alignment and may cause damage to the TMJ over time.

Injury. TMJ can result from impacts to the jaw.  Injuries can alter jaw alignment leading to painful symptoms.

Illness. Illnesses can harm muscle and bone tissues and may lead to a weaker TMJ susceptible to injury or damage.

Grinding Teeth. Known as bruxism, grinding teeth can destroy tooth surfaces, altering the bite and damaging the TMJ.

Personal Choices. Chewing gum, consuming alcohol, and using tobacco all can affect the health and strength of the TMJ.

Diagnosing TMJ Ear Pain in Houston

The first step in treating ear pain is diagnosing TMJ disorders.  TMJ disorders can cause ear pain due to pressure on the ear canal.  When the bite is out of alignment, one side of jaw muscles must work harder than the other to operate the jawbone.  Over time, this muscle imbalance can affect the jaw, raising one side of the jawbone higher than the other.  This process pulls the jawbone, a very dense and solid bone, in toward the neck.  Pulling inward, the jawbone can pinch the ear canal, much like placing a kink in a garden hose.  Pressure on the air canal from the jawbone restricts airflow through the ear canal and may also pinch nerves.

Ear pain, vertigo, and an audible whistling of air inside the ear can all result from TMJ disorders.  Dr. Barras can stop ear pain by restoring jaw position to its optimal location.  Restoring the bite relieves pressure on the ear canal, eliminating ear pain caused by TMJ.

  1. TMJ disorders can develop from different causes, moving the bite out of balance and alignment.
  1. Responding to an imbalanced/misaligned bite, the jaw and facial muscles exert effort disproportionately.
  1. The jawbone is pulled stronger to one side, moves into the neck, and places pressure on the ear canal.
  1. Air movement through the ear canal is obstructed affecting equilibrium, creating noise, and causing earaches.

Treating TMJ Ear Pain in Houston

Treating ear pain starts with a complimentary TMJ examination.  Ear pain caused by TMJ will likely grow in severity over time if left untreated.  As the facial muscles continue to exert uneven force, the jawbone can place increasingly more pressure on the ear canal.  In many cases, a dentist with specialized training may be the best person to diagnose and treat ear pain.  A Fellow with the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI), Dr. Barras belongs to a small group of uniquely-talented dentists helping patients overcome TMJ disorders and their symptoms permanently.  TMJ treatment at Dentistry by John Barras, DDS consists of three steps.
