Dr. Barras and his staff have been treating individuals suffering from TMJ, which is short for temporomandibular joint for many years.  TMJ develops in the joint of the jaw where the top and bottom jaws come together.  Since your teeth, jaw joints, head and neck muscles and head posture are all related, a problem in one area will affect the other.

The first symptoms are normally facial or jaw pain, headaches that result in pain behind your eyes and dizziness.   You may also notice a clicking sound when you open your mouth wide.  Or, you may find it difficult to open your jaw very much without feeling as though your jaw is locking up.

Other TMJ symptoms include: pain in the ears, earaches, ringing in the ears, difficulty swallowing or loosening of teeth. TMJ symptoms can affect other areas of the body as well including the neck, back and shoulder.  You may also develop numbness or the sensation of pins and needles in the arms through to the fingers.  When left untreated, TMJ can cause even more symptoms to occur.  As we age, the symptoms of TMJ progress.

Dr. Barras is a TMJ dentist.  He and his staff are trained in neuromuscular dentistry.  Dr. Barras and Dr. Gusemano are experienced in diagnosing these problems.  Our dentists will evaluate your history, do a physical examination of your head, neck and teeth and conduct a series of non-invasive electronic tests.  Based on these results, the dentists will be able to determine whether your bite is major cause of the problem.

If you do have a problem, many times TMJ can be corrected with a bite guard or bite adjustment. An orthotic will be made than can be worn over your teeth to maintain the proper bite position.  Our TMJ dentists will work with you to find the best treatment plan.
