About Dr. Kathleen Akers

Dr. Kathleen Akers graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. At Vanderbilt, Dr. Akers was on the Dean's List, Vanderbilt Dance Team, Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, Omicron Delta Epsilon National Honor Society, and Student Government. She also spent time studying abroad, as part of the Vanderbilt-in-Italy program.

Dr. Akers then attended Creighton University for dental school. At Crieghton, Dr. Akers was part of the Idaho Dental Education Program and worked as a teaching assistant in the Departments of Endodontics and Periodontics. She also participated in an externship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Department of Prosthodontics.

While at Creighton, Dr. Akers participated in research leading to the published article, "Lysophosphatidic acid modulates the regenerative responses of human periodontal ligament fibroblasts." Dr. Akers was pleased to be a part of the Dean's List, serve as a Delegate at the Interprofessional Education for Health Professions Collaborative Care Conference, received the Outstanding Student in Periodontics Award, and received a grant from the state of Idaho during her time at Creighton University.

Dr. Akers attended University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston for her Periodontics training. Upon completion she received a Masters in Science with a Certificate in Periodontics. While at UTHSC-Houston, Dr. Akers was the chief investigator in the clinical trial, "A Clinical Study Comparing the Early Tissue Response of Around Platform Switching and Traditional Endosseous Dental Implants." This research has been presented at meetings throughout the state and is being submitted for publication. After graduation, Dr. Akers became a Board-Certified in Periodontics.

Dr. Akers has been a licensed dentist in the state of Texas since 2006. She holds permits for enteral, parenteral, and nitrous oxide anesthesia.
